2023 MLF Winter Aluminum Man Details
Bowling: The first, and Richard Nixon would say the most honest, game will be bowling. Each competitor will roll three games, with his/her/their cumulative score ranked against the other competitors. This means the best performer will receive the most points (e.g., if there are 25 bowlers, you get 25 points as the winner, second gets 24 points, etc.). Bowling will begin at 12:00 p.m. SHARP so roll up a few minutes early to get your shoes and obligatory pre-game hotdog. (Disclaimer: The hotdog is not mandatory.)
Pool: Each person will have three tries (with each try including three turns) at a pre-arranged table that looks like this:
You get three innings to make as many balls as you can in whatever order you’d like, with the 9-ball needing to be last. If you miss, pick up the cue ball and put it anywhere. If you make all the balls, any extra turns will be awarded as bonus points. Also, pocketing eight balls will earn you one bonus point and pocketing the 9 will earn another extra point. (So, for example, if you make ‘em all without missing, you get 13 points for nine balls, two bonus points, and two unused turns; make eight one three turns, you get nine points; make two balls on three turns, perhaps you need some instructional help.) If you scratch, that’s just a miss; include any balls you made. And this is a foundational belief of the Marti Leider Foundation — slop counts.
As with bowling and darts, Aluminum Man points will be awarded when ranked against other competitors, with ties going to those with the highest single-round score. (Note: This table diagram software is proprietary of Billiards Digest. NBFD.)
Darts: It’s you against the board. Like the previous competitions, you’re in it for three rounds, each time throwing 15 darts to get as high a score as possible. The book says go for 20s, but I say the glory is in how many bullseyes you can drill.
